about

Notes from Tree:
Safe is a song written years ago. It’s as relevant today as it was long ago. For me, I’ll always love it for Brett’s wonderful bassline, I’ve always seen this song as a duet between bass and voice.
Work on Me is a new song. It’s about a certain ‘woke’ energy that disrespects experience using the past to condemn the present.
The Spoiler is a favorite of mine. We spent years working on it! I’m pleased with the results. The world is filled with Spoilers. Be a creator, not a destroyer.
Random Interface/ Mysterious Obscurity were songs written separately but Brett decided to put them together. In doing so, it’s one of the darkest songs we’ve ever written. It begins with a man weary of meeting anyone who finally trusts a random interface with a woman. He takes her home where she drugs him and steals his kidney. The final line- “Don’t give yourself away” is both figurative and literal.
Enjoy and thanks for listening.

Notes from Brett: Overall, I believe this to be one of our more upbeat efforts. I love playing the bass on "Safe". I'm also particularly proud of how weird the instrumentation/arrangement of "The Spoiler" is. "Work on Me" began as a completely different dance sounding track, but then I later did a "dub mix", which Tree preferred, so it's now the "official" version. We'll release the "original" version as a "remix" on a future release (does any of that make sense?). And last but not least, I'm very fond of the last songs, "Random Interface/Mysterious Obscurity", which are merged together as one big suite. I remember a long time ago when we wrote "Mysterious Obscurity". Someone had told me the old wive's tale about someone going out to a club, meeting someone, then later waking up in a hotel bathtub with their kidneys removed(!), which I had never heard before. I told Tree the story and he used it as the topic for the next lyric he wrote. I also remember writing "Random Interface" with him a long time ago, as well. At the time, it was called something different and had a completely different melody. Later, when we reconvened, I had replayed and rerecorded both of these songs and he wrote a whole new lyric and melody to "Random Interface". It's about a guy going out attempting to make connections with others, only to wake up to the tragic conclusion of "Mysterious Obscurity". I love how dark and twisted that is and only Tree could write such a compellingly dark and twisted narrative like that.
Thanks for listening and we'll be back soon with more new music!
