about

Here's a link on Wikipedia to learn more about the history of the 12" single - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12-inch_single

And....here's my little story about my history with them and why I love them so much:

In the 70's and 80's, many bands put out extended 12" versions of songs for dance clubs. These songs were more than just instrumental mixes of the song appended to the 45". The band would rearrange and even add new bits to these versions. They'd also play with the mixes and the listener could hear other sounds that were previously buried. This was like discovering gold. Then, in the early to mid 80's when sampling technology developed, this new technology was incorporated into the tracks (maybe for the first time in the Nile Rogers' version of Duran Duran's "The Reflex"?). Anyway, eventually, as we all know, the sampler based/cut and paste electronic dance remixes replaced the more labor intensive (for the band) 12" versions.

When I was a kid, I discovered Duran Duran's 12" versions by accident. I saw an album of theirs that I didn't recognize at the old record store next to the place I took guitar lessons. It was called "Tiger! Tiger!" and it absolutely blew my mind. As a hyper musically minded kid (and still am), I found it fascinating to hear songs I knew so well in a different context. I became obsessed and began collecting every old 12" version I could find from that era (Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, INXS, Michael Jackson, Hall and Oates, Prince, Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Wham/ George Michael, Kool & the Gang, etc).

"The Drawing Lesson" is the outlier on this album, as it's an original piece of music, not a 12". It's a score I did for the old Georges Melies 1903 film at the behest of my friend, Andrew Roach at Analog Revolution, and it remained unreleased on cd until now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubvM4P2HuUc

The cover - Douglas Oxford took this picture of me at a gig - Thanks, Douglas! I happened to be wearing a Duran Duran t-shirt and, like I said, this is a very Duran Duran inspired idea, so I thought it would be good to use it for this cover. Gian Franco Uy, who does a lot of work for all of my Mark D. Pencil projects, did great the artwork.
