The title, "Life From Generation XS", comes from the idea that we live in a time when technology seemingly allows people to have access to everything at once. We're inundated with the latest news, pop culture, and technology, and it's easier to communicate with each other from all over the world at all times, with ease. This constant and easy access can create a culture of instant gratification that actually makes people more distant and jaded, rather than in touch, intelligent, and together. Because so many things are always at our finger tips, we appreciate less. Instead of unifying us, it can make our differences and divisions even greater, if we don't make conscious choices of appreciation, betterment, and positivity. My idea for the title of this cd, came from these thoughts. Also, the classic Depeche Mode cd, "Black Celebration" (which I love), has a note at the back of the cd that says "Life from the so-called space age", and that began the turn of the phrase, "Life from...", in my mind.

"Down & Out": This song had several revisions before settling on this version. Basically, it is about trying to run from problems - metaphorically and literally. I had just recently begun to run at a great nature trail next to where I lived and really enjoyed it - just being outside, running along the water, across bridges, etc, and as I ran, the ideas for this song were born.

"Lightning Strikes": It's difficult to describe what this song is about. At the time, I began taking long walks at night. While it seemed the world was sleeping, I was enjoying the tranquility of those moments. The lyrics are trying to express those thoughts and it is musically one of my most proudest pieces.

"Chasing Satellites": This is a song about chasing after dreams/ideas/people/things that are seemingly always just out of reach.

"Waste of Today": This song really came to life for me when Darrell Leven played guitar on it with me. Then, in the studio, Mandi Watson Crosby and Tiffany Watson added the perfect accompaniment. I was always proud of the lyrics to the song, but didn't really love the song until they played their parts to it. The song is sort of about my school years, feeling as if I didn't fit in with anyone and walked by invisible to everyone. These lines sum up my school days very well - "Tomorrow at school, I'll hide in the corner and sink so I'm invisible and no one will know what I think, I open my book and draw with permanent ink so someone next year will know I was here today".

"Plan B": I had a friend who was in college and always talking about his "plan B" and "plan C", taking into account if "plan A" did not work out. So...I wrote this song called "Plan B". I wrote the music on my friend's (Darrell Leven) instrument called a papoose.

"Tug of War": I wrote this song and "Chasing Satellites" in the same day. This song is about the give and take, the back and forth, and the doubts in a relationship. Darrell Leven plays a mean solo in this song too!

"100x16": I have always hated math. I never understood it once I passed the point of simple addition and subtraction in elementary school, so it's funny that I wrote a song with a multiplication problem as the title. Actually, the song has nothing to do with math though. It's all about not being able to sleep at night because of a second burst of energy and my mind wandering...."at night, I wonder where the universe goes"...etc. Musically, it took several directions before it became a "4 on the floor" beat. Originally, my idea was for it to be more like an old Smashing Pumpkins song, believe it or not, but it somehow never worked. Instead, it turned into an almost acoustic-country version of Duran Duran.

"Blissfully Unaware": I wrote this song in the haze of seeing terrorist attacks and war on tv and, quite honestly, being afraid of what was going on "outside" my doors. That idea, while being single at the time and not having anyone else around, made me especially long for a relationship, a love, that would assuage those fears and make me forget about all the hate and violence outside. The original acoustic version appears on "Television and Trash", but I had always wanted to put strings on it, so when I had the opportunity to do so when recording this cd, I rerecorded this song.

"Strike Night": A live version of this song appears on "Television and Trash". After I began playing this song with Darrell Leven and Marc Kipfer, I knew I had to record a studio version of this song, as well. This is a song about my time as the musical director of a theatre production called "Summer Lovin'". The footsteps you'll hear at the end are me walking on a wooden floorboard at a studio that Gavin shared at the time with one of the members of Marilyn Manson's band.

"Alive": This is my attempt at a lyric like George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" (my cover of that song is on my single "Beware"). Even in the darkest hours, storms come, but they always pass. This song began as a piano ballad, but I completely changed the chords and rewrote the music to what it sounds like in this recording.
