about

Notes from Brett:
We wrote the majority of the songs on this cd when we realized that we would be unable to release this music with the record company's help. It was incredibly frustrating and, in retrospect, I think you can hear us realizing that this could be the end of our musical career in Tree's lyrics. It was a difficult time, but I'm still very proud of these songs. I recall being very sick with a flu when we were mixing this cd, so I laid on the back couch while Tree mixed this album.

"Dream & Drown" - I believe this is our best attempt at minimalism and trip-hop.

"Locust Moon" - This was the last song we wrote for the cd and I think you can hear the feeling of the impending end in Tree's lyrics.

"Venom Shafted Heart" - Our Bjork influenced song. I love the bridge.

"Buried in the Sand" - I was very influenced by Lindsey Buckingham's guitar playing at this time. I love Tree's sad lyrics, though they remind me of a terribly difficult time for us. I think this may be one of the most perfect songs and performances that we ever recorded.

"Suicide of Dreams" - Tree mainly wrote this song independently, but I had fun playing the bass on this.

"Shadow of Danger" - I wrote the bulk of the music as an instrumental, hoping that Tree would want to sing on it, but he didn't like it initially. A week passed, and I added the slowed down laughter to it to make it creepier - I thought Tree would like it, so I played it to him again and - thank goodness, he liked it then! We completed the song together that day. I love this song, particularly the second verse.

"Addicted To Oxygen" - Another Bjork influenced song. We watched a video of her talking about being in airports. Tree took/paraphrased what she said and turned it into the first couple lines of the verses.

"Very Private Man/An Absolutely Average Oblivion" - I think this ended up being a very polished version of our "acoustic trip hop" ideas that we had hoped we were making. We added "An Absolutely Average Oblivion" as an afterthought while playing the end of "Very Private Man". We liked it so much, we decided to keep it. I kind of wish that we turned it into a full song, I like it so much.

"No Mercy for Virgin Soil" - We thought we had a classic guitar riff on this one. Trip hop rock.

"The Animating Principle" - Tree sings this one so well. Again, I think this and "Buried in the Sand" (recorded on the same evening) are two of the best songs and performances we have recorded. The strings in this song are samples, layered with a little bit of keyboard stings played by Tree. It was amazing how well the string samples fit into the chord progression I was playing. It was uncanny and must have been one of those things that was just meant to be, because it just randomly worked out so perfectly. The "Untitled Instrumental" at the end of the cd was taken from these same string samples, but we added a beat to it.
