Iron Will & The Lessons Learned, Vol. 1: If Science Had A Conscience...

by Brett Schieber

1.
He spent his life in his books by the glow of computer light In attempts to prove his hypothesis right And all the time that he spent with the data and experiments All the signs that he missed were in front of his eyes While searching for the God Particle And as the decades slipped away he stared into the hospital lights Thinking back on what he couldn't prove right And all the time that he spent with the data and experiments May have been better spent breathing in life Instead of searching for the God Particle
2.
As I write another page in my book, there's so much I want to tell you As I write another page of this fiction, I cling to magic, invention, or illusion to bring you here to me And in this world of gravity our love can never be I tried to bring you here to me, but this gravity keeps us away If science had a conscience it wouldn't be so cold But reality is the only place we can be living, and no magic, invention, or illusion can bring you here to me And in this world of gravity our love can never be I tried to bring you here to me, but this gravity keeps us away And I will try to recover from the weight it has on me And I will try to recover from gravity's effect on me And in this world of gravity our love can never be I tried to bring you here to me but this gravity keeps us away

Sometimes I walk these lonely streets at night Sometimes I talk, but when I do I lie Tonight When daylight fades to night And when darkness covers over us When lightning tumbles down I'm a slave into this sound Meanwhile, everyone spends the night asleep, We come alive and feel everything Tonight When daylight fades to night And when darkness covers over us When lightning tumbles down I'm a slave into this sound
4.
I must learn to protect myself I'm not a man of violence I must learn to protect myself From the sins of science Evil came and broke the law Broke the vows of science I must learn to protect myself From the sins of science

about

This is volume 1 of a 3 part trilogy of Iron Will.

1 - The God Particle - This is the "theme song" for Iron Will. This is one of the first songs I wrote on a baritone ukulele and I really enjoy playing it live - especially when people sing along with the bit at the end. It's about the Higgs Boson - but actually, it's really about more. It's about a scientist who spends his life looking for proof of this "God Particle", while he neglects actually living life.

2 - In This World of Gravity - This song is about an unrequited love and asking questions about why it could never happen. "If science had a conscious, it wouldn't be so cold". The universe can be a cold place and mutual timing for both halves of a love to happen can seem overwhelming and impossible at times. I absolutely love how the strings came out. Mary Beth, Mandi, and Tiffany - The Classy Chicks - played those and I'm always grateful when they play on my songs.

3 - Lightning Strikes - This was an older song that was reappropriated for this album. It's about nature, science, and taking it all in. I wrote it while taking long walks in the dead of night. The line "Lightning strikes" came from listening to "Gypsy", by Fleetwood Mac, while on one of these late night walks. The strings, from the Classy Chicks again, have always been a favorite of mine too.

4 - Deja Vu and the Sins of Science - This is a B-Side from Roland Orzabal (Tears for Fears). I reworked it quite radically.

I'm very lucky that the amazing Timothy Tsang did the artwork for this album. He's a genius. I told him my concept and this looks even better than I had hoped. Can you see the Higgs Boson (the God Particle) in the reflection of his glasses too?

Thank you so very much for listening & I hope you like what you hear!
